Beyond the Bechdel: Representation of Women in Popular and Critically Acclaimed Films

Molly presented her thesis research at the 2023 Frontiers in Undergraduate Research Exhibition and the Eastern Communication Association’s James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference, where she earned the Top Paper Award. The 72-film content analysis spanned the course of her senior year and included both Academy Award-nominated films and top box office-grossing films. Analyzing these movies for their representation of women and other marginalized groups, this thesis perfectly combined her interests in film, communication, media effects, feminism, and social justice. Molly was advised by Dr. Kirstie Farrar, and they are seeking to publish the final paper in an academic journal in the coming months.
